The city of Jining in eastern China's Shandong province has 44 coal mines with total approved capacity of 75 million tonnes per annum, the local government announced at a press conference on November 13.
The mines employ around 73,000 workers, with 40,000 working underground. Jining accounts for 47.8% of Shandong's total coal mines.
The city has spent 7.08 billion yuan ($970 million) to upgrade 202 fully-mechanized mining faces and 215 tunneling faces with intelligent technology across 36 mines, representing 81.8% of total mines.
Intelligent mining now constitutes 84.87% of total extraction volumes in Jining. Four demonstration mines have passed state inspection as the first nationally recognized intelligent model mines.
The city has also strengthened safety management through improved oversight, accident education, grassroots infrastructure upgrades and more technological investment.
The transformation aims to boost high-quality and safe development of Jining's coal industry. Shandong is a major coal-producing province, supplying power generation and heavy industry along China's east coast.
