Coal shipments from Australia's Gladstone port grew 8.9% from a year earlier to 5.72 million tonnes in October, which also rose 6.7% from a month ago, marking the second consecutive month for growth, showed data from the Gladstone Ports Corporation.
India was the top coal destination from Gladstone in October with shipments at 1.53 million tonnes, up 41.9% on the year and 30.6% compared to the month-ago level, data showed.
Gladstone shipped 1.43 million tonnes to Japan in the month, climbing 4% year on year and 21.4% from September, while South Korea received 0.96 million tonnes of coal from the port, down 5.9% on the year and 3% on the month.
Around 70% of Gladstone coal is metallurgical coal, used in steelmaking, and the rest 30% thermal coal for power generation.
The total exports were 51.7 million tonnes during January-October, ticking up by 0.4% from a year ago.
