India's coal output saw a significant growth in October due to government's committed to energy self-sufficiency.
In October, the country's coal production reached 78.65 million tonnes, up 18.59% from 66.32 million tonnes in the same period last year, data from the Ministry of Coal showed on November 3.
Coal India Ltd (CIL), the state-owned coal mining group, raised its production from 52.94 million tonnes in October 2022 to 61.07 million tonnes this month, a rise of 15.36%.
Cumulative production for the fiscal year up to October 2023 reached 507.02 million tonnes, compared to 448.49 million tonnes in the same period of FY’ 21-22, marking a 13.05% rise.
The surge in coal production has been mirrored by a corresponding increase in coal supplies. In October, supplies surged to 79.30 million tonnes, an 18.14% increase from 67.13 million tonnes in October 2022.
CIL's supplies also jumped substantially by 14.83% year on year to 61.65 million tonnes this month. Its cumulative supplies totaled 541.73 million tonnes from April to October, versus 483.78 million tonnes during the same period in FY’ 22-23, a rise of 11.98%.
The Ministry of Coal has underlined the importance of this escalation in coal production and dispatch as a critical step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency and meeting the nation's future energy requirements. The government is unwavering in its commitment to enhancing coal production and distribution to ensure a stable energy supply that supports the nation's growth.
