Coal exports at the Hampton Roads terminals in the state of Virginia of the US was 2.7 million short tons (2.45 million tonnes) in September 2023, falling 16% month on month but up 2% year on year, showed the latest data from Virginia Maritime Association.
The Dominion Terminal Association (DTA) terminal in Newport News shipped 1.0 million short tons, an 11% drop from a month ago and down 2% compared with a year ago.
Coal exports through Lamberts Point terminal, operated by Norfolk Southern, stood at 1.0 million short tons, diving 17% on the month yet rising 3% on the year, which were mainly metallurgical coal.
Coal exports through Pier IX, operated by energy giant Kinder Morgan, were 660,000 short tons, down 21% month on month but up 7% from a year ago, which mostly were thermal coal.
In the first nine months of this year, the Hampton Roads terminals exported a total 26.1 million short tons of coal, 8% higher than the same period in 2022.
