India's power generators' thermal coal imports saw a notable second straight month-on-month increase in September, reaching a new high since the same month in 2022, according to official data.
Power producers imported 5.58 million tonnes of thermal coal in September, rising 10.91% from 5.03 million tonnes in the same month last year and surging 28.23% from 4.35 million tonnes in August, showed data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Among all imported by power companies last month, 3.89 million tonnes were directly burned, surging 128.29% year on year and 26.94% month on month, and 1.69 million tonnes were blended with domestic coal, diving 49.18% year on year but jumping 31.32% from a month ago.
Among power utilities blending imported coal with the domestic resources, 6 state-owned power enterprises imported 860,000 tonnes and 6 private enterprises imported 831,900 tonnes; among those directing burning imported coal for power generation, one state-run company purchased 96,500 tonnes and 13 private power enterprises imported 3.79 million tonnes.
In September, Mundra of Adani Group imported most thermal coal, at 1.33 million tonnes, followed by Mundra of Tata Power Group, at 712,200 tonnes.
In the first six months of this fiscal (April-September 2023), Indian power companies imported 278 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 19.01% from 343 million tonnes a year ago. About 17.08 million tonnes were directly burned in this period, and 10.71 million tonnes were blended with domestic supplies.
