China's coal production is expected to decline to around 4.2 billion tonnes (Bt) in 2030 after peaking in 2027, according to the Annual Report on Coal Industry in China 2023 issued by China National Coal Association on October 14.
In 2022, China produced 4.56 Bt of coal.
Data showed, coal consumption in China has been increasing since 2000, especially during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. Consumption over coal increased from 3.84 Bt in 2016 to 4.34 Bt in 2022.
"Coal utilization in the country will see mild upticks in the future, and the peak demand is forecasted at 4.5 Bt, which will drop to around 4 Bt in 2030," said Guo Zhonghua, the director of political research department of the institution.
The report indicated the role of coal, as primary energy source, will not be altered. The coal industry is forging towards cleaner and more high-effective shape.
Specifically, the net effectiveness of coal-fired power generation will break 50% by 2030, and this will save 800 million tonnes of coal equivalent and reduce carbon dioxide emission of 2 billion tonnes.
A well-rounded, clean and efficient coal utilization system will be formed in 2035, and utilization rate by then will rise to above 90%.
