China's Taiwan imported 5.22 million tonnes of coal in September, falling 3.16% year on year and 11.38% month on month, marking a new low since May, preliminary customs data showed.
The import value for coal in September was $940 million, down 39.5% from a year ago and 6.99% from August. The average import price was calculated at $180.26/t, down 37.52% year on year but up 4.96% month on month.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in September, totaling 1.89 million tonnes (-33.83% YoY, -39.94% MoM), followed by Indonesia at 1.44 million tonnes (-11.81% YoY, +21.49% MoM) and Russia at 817,300 tonnes (+69.5% YoY, +13.08% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal, totaling 4.14 million tonnes, up 1.21% YoY yet down 17.01% MoM; imports of other coal reached 1.08 million tonnes, dropping 16.93% YoY yet rising 20.83% MoM.
From January to September, Taiwan's total coal imports were 45.83 million tonnes, down 6.88% YoY, while the total import earnings were $9.72billion, down 19.95% YoY.
In September, Taiwan imported 14,100 tonnes of coke, soaring 82.45% YoY and up 27.11% MoM, with the import value at $4.44 million, up 25.79% YoY and 39.05% MoM. Total coke imports in January-September declined 28.13% year on year to 125,200 tonnes, with the value down 50.99% to $44.16 million.
