The US's coal production was estimated at 11.74 million short tons (10.65 million tonnes) over the week ending September 30, down 0.74% week on week and 3.18% year on year, showed data from Energy Information Administration on October 5.
Coal output in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 5.34 million short tons, down 1.25% from a week ago and 9.25% from the previous year.
Illinois's coal output was estimated at 761,300 short tons, down 0.37% compared to the week-ago level yet rising 15.22% on the year, while Appalachian coal production was estimated at 3.28 million short tons, down 0.48% from the week prior but up 6.79% from a year ago.
During the first 39 weeks of 2023, US coal output totaled 443 million short tons, a 1.3% decline from 448 million short tons in 2022, data showed.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 68,365 rail wagons, decreasing 481 from a week earlier and 2,332 from the preceding year. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 2.57 million wagons, a small 0.1% fall year on year.
