The Daofu pumped-storage power station commenced construction on January 12 in southwestern China's Sichuan province, according to Yalong River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd.
With an estimated investment of 15.1 billion yuan ($2.11 billion), the Daofu power station is not only set to be the pumped-storage project with the largest installed capacity in Sichuan, but also the highest-altitude pumped-storage power station in the world with an altitude of 4,300 meters, the company said.
The power station's designed installed capacity reaches 2.1 GW after completing construction, which could generate over 2.99 TWh of electricity per year.
The station is anticipated to store 12.6 GWh of electricity each day, covering the power consumption demand of roughly 2 million households in Sichuan.
The station will generate electricity in the peak period by releasing the power stored in the off-peak period, supplementing wind and solar power generation and adjusting the fluctuating photovoltaic power generation of about 6 GW into stable power supply.
At present, the world's highest-altitude pumped-storage power station is the Yamzho Yumco Lake pumped-storage power station with an altitude of about 3,600 meters, based in the Tibet autonomous region in southwestern China.
