Northern China's coal-rich Shanxi province produced 1.13 billion tonnes of coal during January-October, a 5.1% rise year on year, according to data from the provincial energy bureau.
The energy bureau predicted another 218 million tonnes of coal churned out in the rest of two months this year in Shanxi, which will take the total volume for the entire 2023 to over 1.34 million tonnes, higher than 1.19 billion tonnes and 1.31 billion tonnes of coal in 2021 and 2022, respectively, data showed.
Over the January to October period, the province reached a high fulfillment rate for term coal contract of 91.3%, surpassing the target set by China's central government. This indicates Shanxi's crucial role in ensuring national energy security and supply.
Shanxi has been actively promoting the construction of intelligent coal mines in recent years, with all ten of the first batch of nationally designated intelligent demonstration mines being completed and eight of them passing on-site inspections, media reported, citing relevant officials of the energy bureau.
Shanxi has, in total, established 78 intelligent coal mines and equipped 1,316 mining faces with intelligent technologies.
Regarding power security, Shanxi takes various measures to promote the operational capabilities of coal-fired power units and to encourage thermal power enterprises to run at full capacity during winter peak season, ensuring a reliable power supply even under extreme cold weather conditions and addressing the heating needs across the province.
The province will continue to utilize production capacity from newly established mines in 2024 to guarantee a stable power coal supply with enhancing the supply capability.
