Coal production in Russia's key producing area of Kuzbass declined 1.4% or 2.3 million tonnes from a year ago to 160.2 million tonnes during January-September of 2023, according to the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass.
Coal produced from opencast mines stood at 107.6 million tonnes, down 0.9% or 1.0 million tonnes year on year, while that from underground mines fell 2.4% or 1.3 million tonnes on the year to 52.6 million tonnes.
Production of coking coal reached 49.9 million tonnes, an increase of 3.1% or 1.5 million tonnes year on year. Thermal coal extraction volumes decreased 3.3% or 3.8 million tonnes on the year to 110.3 million tonnes.
During January-September, a total of 130.4 million tonnes of coal were delivered to end users, down 1.7% year on year.
Specifically, 85.3 million tonnes were exported, a year-on-year drop of 3.2%. Russian metallurgical companies received 24.9 million tonnes of coal, up 3.3% year on year, and coal shipments to local coal-fired power plants amounted to 13.1 million tonnes, a 3.1% rise.
As of October 1, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.1 million tonnes, 11.1% or 2.1 million tonnes higher than the corresponding period last year amid international sanctions against Russia and logistical issues.
