Japan imported 13.55 million tonnes of coal in September, an 8.7% decrease year on year, showed the preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance on October 19.
The import value was 381.37 billion yen ($2.55 billion), falling 49.5% from a year ago, data showed.
Imports from the U.S. rose 11.4% from a year ago to 1.00 million tonnes, with the value down 3.6% to 31.46 billion yen. Russian coal imports declined 49% compared with the previous year to 164,000 tonnes, which was worth 4.51 billion yen, a notable 68.4% decrease.
In September, Japan imported 8.42 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 11% on the year, with import value at 219.38 billion yen, tumbling 56.2% year on year.
Thermal coal intakes from the U.S. were 283,000 tonnes, down 27.3% from a year earlier; value fell 19.1% on the year to 7.41 billion yen. The country imported 159,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Russia, 50.6% lower than the same month last year, with value down 69.4% to 4.36 billion yen.
Japan imported 5.53 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas during the month, up 3.8% from the preceding year; value fell 44.8% on the year to 484.42 billion yen.
