JSW Steel, India's leading steel producer, recently discussed with Teck Resources, a Canadian mining company, regarding the potential acquisition of Teck's metallurgical coal division, but they have not yielded any concrete results, said Jayant Acharya, the CEO of JSW Steel.
The acquisition process was slowed down last month by the diplomatic dispute between India and Canada. The largest steelmaker in India, JSW Steel, was affected by the strained relations between the two countries.
In June this year, a dispute arouse between India and Canada after a murder of a Sikh separatist leader in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Both countries expelled each other's diplomats, subsequently deteriorating their diplomatic relations.
Acharya mentioned that the diplomatic tensions are less likely to impact business decisions. "Let us see how those situations evolve," he added.
JSW Steel has been actively exploring overseas coal assets in multiple countries, including Australia. The company currently imports coking coal from various nations such as Australia, Canada, the United States, and Russia.
