Construction of the Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline is on track to start in the first quarter of 2024, right after the approval of the project design documentation, Tass reported, citing Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Arbamchenko.
The Power of Siberia 2 is a proposed natural gas pipeline that would export gas from Russia's Western Siberia Altai region to Northeastern China. The pipeline would cut through eastern Mongolia and into China.
Arbamchenko, in a statement following a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, expressed confidence in the project's adherence to its schedule without any foreseeable delays.
She highlighted that the pre-feasibility report has already been concluded, with the design phase expected to conclude by the year's end. The forthcoming step, involving the approval of design documentation complete with all necessary findings, is slated for the initial quarter of the following year. This milestone will signal the green light for the commencement of the construction phase.
Arbamchenko elaborated that construction could commence in either the first quarter or the first half of 2024, reinforcing the commitment to a timely and efficient implementation of the project.
It is designed to facilitate the annual supply of up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas to China via Mongolia. The pipeline's route through Mongolia spans approximately 960 kilometers, marking a significant step in enhancing energy infrastructure and cooperation in the region.
Russian energy giant Gazprom said it is ready to become a partner in the development of gas supply system of Mongolia.
The length of the Mongolian section of the pipeline will be about 960 km.
However, there are still problems on the way to China's agreement to sign up for the pipeline, according to a report by Petroleum Economist.
Insiders questioned whether the project is cost-effective for China, where renewables are developing rapidly and will compete with gas for residential heat.
